Today, Oct. 6, finds the newest release in the U.S. Mint’s large format program of America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins. Available beginning at noon ET is the 2016-P Theodore Roosevelt National Park Uncirculated Five Ounce Silver Coin. The collectible is the thirty-fourth released in the series, and the fourth of five for this year.
It is composed in five ounces of 99.9% pure silver, has a diameter of 3 inches, features an uncirculated finish and is produced at the Philadelphia Mint.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is named after the 26th President of the United States. The park is located in the state of North Dakota near an area where Roosevelt once lived.
Coin Designs
A young Theodore Roosevelt on horseback surveying the terrain near the Little Missouri River is the scene that appears on the coin’s reverse (tails side). It is the same basic image as found on related Theodore Roosevelt quarters which launched into circulation in August. Joel Iskowitz created the artwork and Phebe Hemphill executed its sculpting.
Also like quarters, all coins of the program bear an obverse portrait of George Washington, the first U.S. president. John Flanagan created the effigy which was first used on quarter dollars in 1932.
Obverses include a ‘P’ mintmark to indicate their production at the United States Mint facility in Philadelphia.
The content and size of each coin is denoted with edge lettering reading: .999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE.
Ordering and Mintage
2016-P Theodore Roosevelt National Park Five Ounce Uncirculated Silver Coins are available directly from the United States Mint for $149.95. Place orders by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468) or from this product page on the U.S. Mint’s website.
A maximum potential mintage of 30,000 is in place, but this may be adjusted lower depending on demand for the related bullion coin which is described immediately below.
Roosevelt Five Ounce Bullion Coin
Carrying nearly identical specifications, the U.S. Mint also produces a 2016 Theodore Roosevelt National Park Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin. Intended for investors, the coin has a brilliant bullion finish and lacks the ‘P’ mintmark despite also being produced in Philadelphia.
Maximum combined mintage for the bullion and uncirculated five ounce coins is 150,000. The Roosevelt bullion piece launched on Aug. 29 and has sales of 30,500 through Oct. 5. Bullion coins are sold through the U.S. Mint’s network of authorized purchasers who resell them to precious metal and coin dealers as well as the public for a premium above the spot price of the five ounces of silver in each.
With the drop in price of gold does anyone know if the Mint will be reducing the price of gold commemorative coins ?

Can not buy the teddy Roosevelt 5 dollar silver piece what’s up with the system
Jp – most likely you’ll see a one tier decrease ($12.50 for a gold Comm) should gold stay below $1,300 thru next Wednesday, should the London fix average work out in the low $1,240’s.., you’ll see a two tier price decrease (which will be quite iffy given where we are today).
Thanks Darrin, any chance we might be able to pry 1st days out the mint for this much anticipated Roosevelt release?
One of the best design thus far for an AtB – thanks
I like this ATB 5-ounce silver puck quarter dollar coin design best of the 5 designs this year. With spot silver at $17.76 on day of issue & priced at $149.95 we buyers are paying a $61.15 premium over spot price ($12.23 per ounce premium). Worth it IMHO. Enrollments were high for this one!
