The single-coin 2022-W Proof American Silver Eagle sold out ahead of its scheduled April 14 release, the United States Mint told customers this week in an email notice, saying their inventory has been depleted by enrollments.
U.S. Mint enrollment programs work much like a magazine subscription. When you sign up to receive a family of products, they are shipped automatically to you when they become available.
The latest announcement comes on the heels of another U.S. Mint notice that relayed earlier Silver Eagle sellouts. It told customers that their enrollments had claimed all West Point 2022-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagles and San Francisco 2022-S Proof American Silver Eagles.
The Mint advises customers to use their "Remind Me" tool found on each product’s page (https://catalog.usmint.gov/coins/coin-programs/american-eagle-coins/) in the event any of the coins become available following order processing and reconciliation.
Other U.S. Mint products have been selling out on enrollments as well, like those featuring 2022 American Women quarter dollars.
2022-W Proof American Silver Eagle in Other Products
The 2022-W Proof American Silver Eagle is also included as part of the 2022 Congratulations Set, scheduled for release on April 14, and the 2022 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set, scheduled for release this fall.
Collectors will have a chance at buying those on their release dates since they have no enrollment options. The Congratulations Set is limited to 30,000 units and the 2022 Limited Edition Silver Proof Sets is limited to 50,000.
Mintages of 2022 American Silver Eagles
According to U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White, the 2022-dated coins have mintage limits totaling:
- 746,760 for the West Point 2022-W Proof American Silver Eagle with splits of at least 500,000 for the single coin; 166,760 in single coins reserved for bulk buyers; and 30,000 for the Congratulation Set*
- 321,840 for the San Francisco 2022-S Proof American Eagle, including 50,000 reserved for the 2022 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set
- 219,640 for the West Point 2022-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle

The 2022 American Eagle Silver One Ounce Proof Coin (W), the American Eagle Silver One Ounce Proof Coin (S) and the American Eagle Silver One Ounce Uncirculated Coin (W) inventories have all been depleted. This marks the first time in U.S. Mint history that all American Eagle silver coins have been depleted through enrollments.
During order processing and reconciliation, some units may become available, those units will be made available to customers via "Remind Me" notification. If you have not signed up for a "Remind Me" notification, please don’t hesitate to take this opportunity to do so.
An additional reminder — the 2022 Congratulation Set, which includes the 2022 American Eagle One Ounce Silver Proof Coin (W), goes on sale on April 14th, at noon EST. This coin will also be included in the 2022 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set which goes on sale this Fall.

Kaiser: Excellent question. If there was a cap of 300k perhaps that will allow 200k left to be sold on the 14th. Odd that the mint says their inventory depleted by enrollments though.

Based on the mintage figures mentioned in this news report and the fact that the Mint catalog product page for the “coming soon” release of the 2022-W ASE Proof on April 14 displays data-available = 366,750, of which 166,750 are reserved for the Bulk Buyers, leaving an amount or 199,990 available for the general public (and dealers) to purchase on release day. Bottom line is we have the numbers and personally I am not impressed with how many there are. I thought the W’s would be in the 300k range but 700k does not make these as desirable as the others.

How can it sell out if there is neither a mintage limit nor product limit? Three quarters of a million coins hardly makes it a rare issue.
It’s the planchets that determine the amount of coins minted. How many the mint is able to procure from their supplier(s). Apparently demand for silver planchets is high, limiting the amount the mint is able to get. Vis a vis the mintages for these coins.

Major, I have not been following the 2022 Proof Set close enough to know how its sales will go. Perhaps Sir Kaiser or someone else seeing your question may be able to provide a better reply.

This sounds spot on. When you think about it, what if everyone canceled their enrollments? Worst case but there will be modifications by enrollees up until two days before sale date.

Last year on the 2021 Enrollments they locked you in to your selected amount. They had a disclaimer at the top of your enrollment page, No changes. Nothing is there yet but you may not be able to increase your selection now that they have said its sold out. You can make a change but it is not what they sell you.
Allan: You can switch your enrollment(s) to inactive. Whatever that order was for would then be available to others on 4/14. Very common practice.

Hi Rich and Sir Kaiser. I’m pretty sure I enrolled for 4. That’s how many I usually get per year. I agree with your assumption that the 200,000 will be sold on the 14th. Although the way the USmint words it it’s hard to say wether or not just the enrollments are full or if you didn’t enroll you will have to hit the remind me button and hope for returns, declined credit cards or fraudulent orders. Mord, I originally got the mintage information on the product limits for the enrollment program ASEs directly from the product page of each ASE, e.g., ASE W Proof product limit = 300,000; ASE W Uncirculated product limit = 175,000. Recently however, the Mint changed the mintage information for all three ASE enrollments, which now state product limit: None and HOL: None. Finally the number of items available, e.g., data-available = 366, 750, is found via searching on the source page of the item’s product page.
I see . I think the total for the ASE -W ,is 366, 750 which includes the 30k for the congratulations and 50k for the legacy set. This includes all enrollments.
I think the 746 ,750 is far to excessive.

The Congrats set will have one, of over 600,000 ASE-W Proof Silver Dollars in it. The novelty of the Congrats Set would be in getting it graded by PCGS, NGC for their special congrats case and then managing to get the elusive MS70 grade from them. On top of that, it must be mailed to one of the grading companies in the unopened US Mint packaging…because of nefarious malcontents. Big diff in from MS70 to MS69. It’s a gamble…but once opened, all bets are off for the big payoff. Good luck!

30,000 congratulations sets available on the 14th. I’m very surprised they allowed 3 per house unless it was changed. Should have been one to allow more people to have a chance. The big dealers will have all their employees getting their limit of 3. They’ll be gone in under a minute, very sad!
I have never tried for one of these so I have no first-hand knowledge how they sell – I did see someone comment that it could take 60 minutes to sell out- if that is true then the chances of getting one improve some

I wonder how many were sold through Advance Purchase because Mike Sleezack had about 700 already graded and ready to go.
Supposedly the 18 Advance Purchasers can get a portion of the maximum 10% of the total mintage. Ten percent of the single coins’ 500,000 mintage = 50,000 maximum. Evenly divided by the “18” equals an average of 2,777 coins each, which would be eligible for the “Advance Purchase” labeling from NGC/PCGS. So Mike “the Sleaze” Sleezack’s stack of 700 is reasonable

Mike they are different from the other years, not necessarily special. This year’s ASE W Proof is the second year of the Type 2 new reverse design and the refreshed (update and enhanced) obverse design. The 1986-2021 ASE Proof coins had the original Heraldic Eagle (Type 1) reverse design and the unrestored obverse.
If you collect these coins, you are not concerned with the hype or lack there of. If they are low mintage/ new design / or just what ever the scraze is, it is just value added or a plus. I love this hobby and hope one of my grandkids will too.

I lowered my W & S amounts too. I got wound up in the 2021 ASE fever and I am returning to no hype (MM) coin collecting.
I am taking 2 more which will leave me with 6 W’s. This actually leaves me with 2 since the other 4 will be gifts. Had the mintage been lower though I may have held pat. Last year was crazy indeed.

The problem isn’t enrollments, it’s them selling out to bullion dealers first, then canceling everyday collector’s orders when there’s nothing left! Big gov always throws the citizens under the bus!
My order for 1 coin went to backorder, then to processing and finally an e-mail of product cancellation. On the 21st of May, I received the 2 coins ordered on enrollment which were cancelled by the mint on the 14th due to a billing problem. I wonder if the left hand knows what the right hand is doing
