In reply to Kaiser Wilhelm. Yes, quite possible. Knowing what coins were not taken from the package would tell us if you are correct. Like if they left behind a highly valuable silver coin.

Since I have no expertise to speak of in the forensics department, I will restrict my comment to the observation that this could possibly be less a theft of particular coins and more of a grab for the various precious metals the purloined items consisted of.
