Got it, East Coast Guru. The degree of purity only effects the total weight of the coin because regardless of the purity measure there will always be one ounce of silver included in the coin.

According to East Coast Guru, Antonio, they weigh in total whatever they have to in order to include a solid ounce of silver.

The Britannia’s are all 1 oz silver. Before 2013 they were .958 purity or so and then in 2013 went to .999 silver . They always had 1 oz of silver, it is just a matter of purity. Sort of like our gold eagles. Not pure, but still one ounce.

It’s funny that no matter how old we are we still like “make it yourself” opportunities such as these; there’s something special about having done it yourself.

That in itself makes them relatively even more expensive than U.S. Mint silver coins because one is being “shorted” on the silver content.

And one can mint it themselves. It’s a nice incentive to visit the Royal Mint. I minted my own brass medal at the San Francisco Mint, and the former Carson City Mint allows visitors to mint their own medal with a CC mint mark for a modest fee.

UK coins are still sterling silver, 92.5%.
