The first quarter from the United States Mint’s American Women Quarters Program will honor Maya Angelou (1928-2014), a renowned poet, award-winning author and civil rights activist.
Authorized under Public Law 116-330, the series of 2022-2025 quarters will offer up to 20 reverse designs celebrating women who shaped American history.
"The contributions may come from a wide spectrum of accomplishments and fields, including but not limited to suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and arts," the U.S. Mint announced in seeking ideas for the quarters.
The Mint unveiled 7 proposed designs for the first American Women quarter in preparation for their review before the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA).

Obverses (heads side) of American Women quarters will share the same design depicting a likeness of George Washington that is distinguished from past quarter programs. The Mint also unveiled candidates for this obverse design as well as candidates for the second quarter honoring astronaut Dr. Sally Ride.

Why does first design state twenty-five cents? Current and other design use quarter dollar.

Those are some lazy designs. It looks like the flying bird from the cage in one design is the exact same outline as the spread wing design. And the bird flying toward the book? That’s no dove of peace, it’s a damnable pigeon. See the big honking upper beak? Pigeon. Maya Angelou deserves better symbology than a couple copy paste birds and a flying rat.
It’s unfortunate but not surprising that “In God We Trust” was not included.
All the obverse designs had it.

4 is the best, but leave the bird out of it. She’s famous for more than just that one book. And it’s shameful that more of the designs include the bird than include her likeness.
There is a CAC imprinted under the left arm on the obverse of MA-02. Why? What did it stand for?
