As 2022 draws to a close, the Royal Canadian Mint has issued a $2 circulation coin featuring a black outer ring to honor Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s service to Canada during her historic 70-year reign.

Dated 2022 and bearing all the design elements of a standard $2 coin, this new coin is distinguished by its black outer ring reminiscent of a mourning armband, echoing the loss felt by millions of Canadians upon the passing of their queen. The coin will begin circulating later this month.

"Queen Elizabeth II served as Canada’s head of state for seven decades and for millions of Canadians, she was the only monarch they had ever known," said Marie Lemay, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "Our special $2 circulation coin offers Canadians a way to remember her."

This new coin features the traditional Brent Townsend polar bear design on the core of the reverse, as well as the Susanna Blunt effigy of Her Late Majesty on the obverse. While the metal composition of the coin remains unchanged, the outer ring is black. Click here for more information.

Nearly five million coins will enter the national coin distribution system in December and will begin appearing gradually as banks re-stock their $2 coin inventories. Additional volumes may be produced, depending on marketplace needs. The Mint is also hosting public coin exchanges at its Ottawa and Winnipeg boutiques on December 7 and 8, 2022.

Interesting. I don’t see them for sale at the Royal Mint website. Maybe they’ll only be available from banks for regular circulation.

Antonio

Already selling on ebay for $112.

Someone who goes by kiemss on ebay. It’s a presale, as they haven’t been released yet.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Presale flippers have a lot of confidence in their ability to acquire products.

Major D

It was released a few days ago as a Masters Club offering. Upper tiers get first dibs.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Aha. Shows how much I know about the Royal Canadian Mint. By the way, Major D, thanks for the info regarding that release!

Kaiser, for all the faults of the US Mint I find it more transparent than the Royal Canadian Mint. Often the RCM announces a new release with a low mintage, and it’s sold out before it even becomes available– because it’s offered first to the Masters Club, who get advanced notice by several days. At least the US Mint gives you the release day and time, and often an HOL. Whereas the RCM gives an SOL.

I definitely concur regarding that, Major D. Although I have yet to purchase a single item from the RCM I have on the other hand more than a few times come across a coin I would have been very interested in acquiring if it hadn’t already been sold out prior to my having discovered it. I don’t know why the Royal Canadian Mint bothers to tease its potential customers with the knowledge of extremely desirable coins that are in fact “pre-sold out” by the time they are displayed on their site. Very strange.

Kaiser, and anyone else interested, as of the afternoon of December 8th, ALL ASE subscriptions are available, including for proofs.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Thanks, Antonio, for that heads up. I am now subscribed on all fronts.

Antonio

I was hoping you’d get my message. I’m all subscribed up for the ASEs, Morgan and Peace dollars. Now to see how it works for me. I just wait for a confirmation from the Mint?

Kaiser Wilhelm

Antonio,
The “confirmation” can be as simple as the appropriate numbers appearing next to the specific line item on your Subscription List.

The one that’s always in demand.

And why is that? Here I thought the “S” was the premier version.
