Last week, the United States Mint introduced one new numismatic product: their proof set of clad 2023 American Women quarter dollars. Not surprisingly, it was the U.S. Mint’s top weekly seller.
Released on March 21, with quarters honoring Bessie Coleman, Edith Kanakaʻole, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jovita Idar, and Maria Tallchief, the Mint’s set scored six-day starting sales of 40,360.
Last year’s set, which introduced the product line of proof quarters featuring women, debuted with sales of 42,368. The set, however, was essentially sold out from the get-go, with subscriptions claiming the Mint’s inventory.
Sales of American Eagles Decline
Like in the previous week, overall sales of the 2023-W Proof American Silver Eagle saw more reductions than gains. Specifically, totals include:
- a decline of 372 coins to 341,198 coins for the standalone option (product code 23EA),
- no gains and still 71,080 coins (1,777 units) for the 40-coin bulk option (23EA040), and
- a drop of 1,443 coins to 26,882 coins as a part of the Congratulations Set (product code 23RF).
Altogether, sales of the 2023-W Proof Silver Eagle combine to 439,100 coins, for a week-over-week reduction of 1,815. In the prior week, sales of the coin fell by 4,372.
Other American Eagle products also experienced loses, including the 2022- and 2023-dated proof American Platinum Eagle (down 19 and 52, respectively), and the 2022-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle (down 32).

Interesting that items from 2022 are still being returned to the Mint. Doesn’t seem kosher.
I guess it is still possible to order some 2022 items, so it might be those people deciding to return them
60 of the 3 roll Coleman set returned. Guess they weren’t worth selling on E-Bay, so they got returned.
Morgan Unc Mar 25 was 29,298 4 days later now 21,962. a little over 7000 subscribed. at that pace another 2 weeks and they will be gone.
Aha, Tom, that’s good thinking on your part and something I had missed. Thanks!
3 roll set received today.
Congrats, Tom, and enjoy!
Bye Bye U S Mint can’t fix “UGLY” Keep running “FORREST”>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
sam “I am” tweedy, how are things in Every Now And Then Land? What ever else you’re doing with your down (or up) time, my good man, don’t forget to keep running!
These will look nice in the silver version. Coming out April 4th.
I agree, Antonio. Considering all the out of the ordinary design work that went into them and the result of which appears on these coins they should be absolutely gorgeous.
I’m willing to wait until the Silver Proof set including the half dollar, nickel and dime comes out. (Product schedule says “Summer 2023” but it is Aug 1 according to the subscription)
Unless you really want the silver proof dime and silver proof half, you get the most bang-for-the-buck by buying the clad proof set and the silver proof quarter set- as you get the clad cent, nickel and NA $ in both the clad proof set and the silver proof set.
I was wondering about that myself, Major D and Tom, as to whether the silver dime and half dollar were important enough to justify my spending an extra $50 above the price of the Silver AWQ Set just to get the two aforementioned coins. Otherwise, a Silver AWQ Set and Clad Proof Set combo would seem to be the better deal.
well, for $80 you get 1.25 in silver (80/1.25 = 64) the proof set contains 2.91 in coinage (5 at .25 + 1 +.50 +.10 +.05+.01) 35 / 2.91 = 12.02 per dollar for the unsilver set so the silver proof set, less the $coin of $12 becomes 118/1.85 in silver = 63.78 (without reducing for the nickel and penny) so I think the price is close enough to being the same. It boils down to …if you are going to order both proof sets then you are duplicating certain coins and at that point you might only want the… Read more »
Tom, I recognize that we all have our own ways of evaluating and slicing and dicing. Myself, I wasn’t duplicating coins. In my case #1, you buy the AWQ silver proof set for $80 and the clad proof set for $35. In my case #2 you buy the silver proof set for $130 and the clad AWQ proof set for $23. The difference in price between the two cases is $38 which is the difference between having a silver proof half and silver proof dime vs. having a clad proof half and a clad proof dime. You get both the… Read more »
I have complete dime, quarter and half collections going back to 1916. To maintain it I need the unc., clad prf, and silver prf. coins.
As long as the Mint includes these non-silver coins in the silver proof set I end up with duplicate proof cent, nickel, and dollar coins .
Tom, here’s something you don’t see often: APMEX is selling the 2021 Silver Proof set for $99.99 while the Mint still has 18,400 available at a price of $130.
You got my curiosity up – on recent ebay, some have sold for less than $70.
or I see you can buy an empty box for $1.43 plus 3.50 for shipping.
Now how can you pass up such a deal like that!
One element that comes into play with coin sets not bought first hand from the Mint, Tom, is that they’re not always in the best of shape. However, an empty box for a total of $4.93, what could possibly be the drawback on a deal like that? 😉
Kaiser, I’ve found there’s little difference with sets that are only a few years that come from reputable sellers.
Okay now, that is some very interesting and especially eye-opening information, Major D. It hearkens back to all the stories about how the Mint’s coin sets – with the glaring exception of the 2012 issues – don’t hold up well value-wise over time. Something to ponder for future reference.
Yes, and 2012 is an especially perplexing anomaly to me. I could see 2019 and 2020 catching up to 2012 at some point (with the inclusion of the special W coins)
