Before Platinum Eagle sales started on Thursday, the availability was listed as 6200 which dropped to 5099 after the first hour, and to 3202 by Monday morning. That would make sales of 2998 for the first 4 days. Since the mint lists sales of 9620, assuming more weren’t minted over the weekend, it rather implies 6620 were sold before Thursday sales started if their numbers mean anything at all. Maybe it is my mistake to try and make sense of the numbers. Still there is no shortage and anyone who wants one can still buy it.
You must know by now, Kia99, when it comes to the Mint you can’t make sense of cents.
I think 6,000 were loaned to bulk “buyers”. The rest were sold to collectors.
Your supposition is likely right on the money (in more ways than one), REB. It is made all the more plausible thanks to our past observations of how bulk buyers seem to be able to return their unsold merchandise to the Mint without any enforced time limit.
First one sold out. So far this is this week’s best seller at over 9000. A handful more sold in a week than last year’s coin in full year. I wonder why this one so much better seller. I know. Everyone wants deez nuts. (Acorns) I have the first year. Think I skipped last year (pricey) and probably gonna skip this year. Platinum is beautiful, but I’ve always preferred silver over gold and white gold over gold. I see the bucking horse also won coin of the year. I stared at it in my cart and kept updating the sales… Read more »
Nope. I was wrong. It is the alphabet people’s coin. Didn’t see it earlier, but totally obvious for fruits and nuts. Actually says bears fruit, but acorns are nuts not fruit. It is a tree nut. And it makes more sense since most alphabet folk are tree huggers. On the platinum page I see 4 coins. 3 list freedoms and all say liberty. One is the preamble, but says liberty, no mention of the preamble on it at all, just a single mother with kid in a field with liberty in fancy writing. I presume that coin isn’t part of… Read more »
It’s a neck and neck toss-up between the “micro grading area” and Caffeine Mike’s “repetition repetition inclination inclination demonstration demonstration”, Dazed and Coinfused, as to which is my favorite part of your essay.
Of all the words that have passed Caffeine Mike’s lips, these are my favorite:
Knowledge is knowing that an acorn is the fruit of an oak tree.
Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad. lol
Cleverness is coming up with that saying, Roger. Kudos!
Stole the quote from Australian Mark Valencia. He has a gardening channel on YouTube.
I commend you for being such an honest man, Roger, but there is that old saying that possession is nine tenths of the law.
I did replace “tomato” with “Acorn” and added “of an Oak tree” so I’ll take full credit for that alteration of his quote.
As they say, there you have it. Excellent work, Roger!
To be or not to be. That is the question.
No son, the question isn’t why you have 2 B’s, it’s; why you have 3 F’s?
Anecdote, Dazed and Coinfused. In eleventh grade I handed my year end report card to my father. He took one look at it, said “Four A’s and a B. Better luck next time”, and tossed it back to me.
What use do I have for wisdom and knowledge when I’m already a genius. (Imagine wile e coyote, showing his business card)
There is one definitive test. Find someone with severe nut allergies. Tell them that the acorn tree is a fruit tree and have them roll around in a pile of acorns, and nibble on one. I suggest having a epipen on standby. Depending on the article, some say it is the fruit of the tree, others the nut. I tend to think it is similar to a pecan or walnut, but they actually have an outer layer with a meat inside. Pecans also usually have a fleshy pod on the outside during it’s early stages. So do walnuts. While peanut… Read more »
A nut is a fruit with a hard outer shell that does not open to release its seed so technically an acorn is both a nut and a fruit.
Finally a use for all that time spent in college decades ago studying to be a Botany Major. lol
Hello, hey there and ahoy, I happen to be a bit of a tree hugger myself since that’s where I’ve been getting all of my precious oxygen for over seventy-five years now.
Interesting tidbit regarding the true nature of an acorn. It is technically a fruit but due to its hard outer shell it is classified as a nut. Will Caesars never wonder!
Deez nuts can’t help but remind me of a now discontinued brand of hotel snacks, a very spicy variety of tasty legumes that went by the name of “Dorman Hot Nuts”!
A visual to assist with the picturing of that product’s original nomenclature…
“Gold” Coin Of The Year, Dazed and Coinfused. Apparently there is also an all-category champion that is chosen from the various and assorted category winners.
The covid 19 coin.

Gotta have it! In the future, people will be confused as to what it is. Ten years from now, people will have forgotten the COVID-19 pandemic.
No cause for alarm and no need to worry, Antonio and Dazed and Coinfused. We have here for everyone’s edification the ultimate Covid-19 coin featuring The Donald all decked out in a miracle mask of his very own design, the absolutely guaranteed to cure what ails you Lysol & Windex lung-cleaning inhaler.
I liked it so much, Dazed and Coinfused, I picked up the entire set for my collection!
The CCAC meeting on the 2024 quarter designs just concluded. I’ll post an image of their choices. They deadlocked on the design for the PTM quarter and are recommending either of the two designs shown. I marked the designs also recommended by the CFA.
Caliskier’s issue of a two headed coin was discussed. It was explained that to comply with the law a portrait on the reverse of a coin needed to include the head, torso and hands.
Alright, so it’s the hands in addition to the head and torso that allow the coin to comply! Thanks for providing the answer to our earlier thread mystery. However, I’d hate to have to explain how the 2nd “head” isn’t a head but really a tail in a coin toss argument.
Okay, Major D and Roger, I get that, but if the powers that be wanted the individual being honored on an AWQ coin to be on the Obverse of same couldn’t they still comply with the law by putting a really tiny torso and two itsy bitsy hands on George Washington’s portrait and thereby qualify that to be the Reverse?
The mint couldn’t honor the Addams family in a coin series. They would probably release Wednesday on a Sunday even though she us the daughter. Morticia would probably be OK. Gomez is hit or miss as he sounds like he belongs on a peso not a dollar. Uncle Fester would probably fall into the American innovations series for his work with the light bulb. Lurch would have to be extremely limited edition and his coin would just pop up at coin shows randomly. And Thing, well… he has no head or torso and Cousin It, you can’t see the face… Read more »
Practically speaking, Dazed and Coinfused, both the Addams Family and The Munsters would be better served having their commemorative coins commissioned by and produced for some tiny Pacific atoll nation like “Nolandia” or such, you get my drift(wood).
Postscript: An additional advantage would be US laws wouldn’t apply as to what body parts have to appear front and/or back.
Roger, Major D Antonio, Kaiser Wilhelm and any others that may have followed along with our discussion. Here is the official and correspondence I received back from the US Mint this morning. Hello, Caliskier(Mr Smith/My Last name) “Thank you for contacting the United States Mint concerning the American Women Quarters™ Program coin honoring Jovita Idar. As noted, the reverse (tails) design of the Jovita Idar quarter features a depiction of Idar with her hands clasped, and within her body are inscriptions representing some of her greatest accomplishments and the newspapers for which she wrote. Although the provision in the authorizing… Read more »
It’s so very gratifying, Caliskier, that you managed to elicit from the one and only source some for all practical purposes incontrovertible proof that there are in fact some actual live human beings working at the United States Mint. That is of course discounting the possibility that in the process of perfecting their successful anti-bot software they didn’t as a side-effect happen to also develop some exceedingly intelligent and capable AI.
I see 3 Sally Ride 3 roll quarter sets were ‘sold’. Must have found them lying round somewhere, since they were sold out March 22 last year.
I guess, Tom, that you just never know what you’re going to find in a locker that formerly belonged to someone who once worked on the Mint’s graveyard shift.

You’ve got a lot of good ideas percolating there, Dazed and Coinfused. I recently read that more important than living forever, most especially so since we are not capable of that anyway, is having the interest and inclination to come up with ideas, concepts and suggestions that make sense and appeal to others within the time that we are given on this earth. That notion makes a lot of sense to me, and it appears that you’ve got quite a good handle on it yourself.
In related news, I saw that I can see the falcon rocket from my front yard. Pretty cool. Just watched crew 6 launch after midnight. Next time I’ll grab my binoculars to look. But traveling at almost 17,000 mph is crazy. Too bad they don’t make em with manual transmission
I would love to be able to see that. Which brings to mind the thought that perhaps trying to get into space is in the end more important than conquering it.
