Numismatic sales were sluggish for the U.S. Mint during the first week of 2023. Expect more of the same in the next few weeks. U.S. Mint sales should be down for a while with the very first 2023-dated products for collectors not launching until Jan. 30.
Snapping a streak of three slightly improving weeks, the latest Mint stats showed lower volumes of sales with only 27 products outperforming their prior weekly increases compared to 65 previously.
Seventeen products posted negative weekly sales against 3 in the previous report. The reductions were modest, though, with the highest tagged to the older 2021-dated Proof Set which dipped by 5 units.

The U.S. Mint’s sales this year appear to resemble the trajectory of a roller coaster; for the first month we are uneventfully ascending the track to the peak for the first drop, and then as we shoot down the other side the Mint’s products will begin flying by at great speed.
KW: It would be nice if they spaced out the offerings. Poor planning could reek havoc when multiples are offered. Although, it seems to have improved last year. Some months I have zero purchases on my CC from the mint. Other months my CC is maxed out.
When I first perused this year’s Mint schedule, Rooster, I was more than a little surprised that practically all of January was “coin free”, especially since I don’t recall that being standard practice. I have to agree with you that this particular pattern of releasing items to the public is a bit off-putting when it comes to purposes of being able to spread out expenses a bit. To be fair, though, the Mint is balancing this out by allowing customers to sign up for subscriptions, a system which provides us with the means to better calculate upcoming outlays.
Hi
Watching my spending this year. I am going for 3 each of the Morgan and Peace since it’s the first year. Cutting back to minimum on the rest. I did let MM talk me into the NGC X 2023 silver eagle. What do you readers think about the X rating for coins?
Allan, I wouldn’t be honest with you if I didn’t admit there’s no simple way to answer your question considering there’s no escaping that a mention of Methedrine Mike somehow slipped into this situation. One the one hand there’s the new “10” rating system for coins which as a thing unto itself has barely arrived on the numismatic scene as yet; on the other there’s a character who reminds me of no less than an Indian tech scammer offering to fix your computer via his remote control of it. Perhaps one solution is to be introduced to and further explore… Read more »
Hi Allan, just wondering, not trying to be critical or anything, did you buy from MM to get the grading certificate that comes with the NGCX coin? Most/all of MM prices are 75-100% more than other retail outlets. I purchased one of the NCGX as well from another seller for $78 with free shipping, just to have one out of curiosity. That seems to be the going rate. MM is really making a killing selling those silver bars in grams. 250g bars for $450, 1000g bars for $1539. Current silver price per gram is .77 cents, or $192.50 for 250g… Read more »
Thanks for your well-timed and comprehensive input in this regard, gman1964, as more awareness among the coin buying public of the twisted shenanigans of Caffeine “Sold Out Limited Edition You Can’t Get It Anywhere Else” Mike Mezack can certainly never hurt. I can see from the comparative sales prices that you provided that what I just yesterday read about Mike “I Say Everything Twice I Say Everything Twice” Mezack is absolutely on target in that he charges from 100% to 200% over typical market price. What a sleazy con artist, and he makes millions!
Not sure about the mike methsack coin. Seems he has monopolized the US mint. Exclusive flag. Exclusive this. Limited edition of 9,000. Limited to first day only for new year. Igc, anacs, ngc, pcgs. Has his own foot in the door. I almost got one for the free grading, but I got the anacs before a few years ago and never got to use it. When I did consider, it expired. Of course I got in March and expired in June. At least this offer you get 6 months. Other thing. When I call the grades, they say they don’t… Read more »
My goodness, Dazed and Coinfused, it seems to be looking more and more, at least to me if indeed no one else yet, as if Caffeine Mike has to some extent and in his own inimitable if not entirely original way somehow achieved the cultural iconic status of no less than, for example, one of the Kardashians (our own across the Pond version of the Royal Family), who I previously thought were figments of imaginary Deep Space Nine fabrication until the earth’s yellow press provided sufficient ostensibly authentic documentation to prove these rather strange beings (creatures? manifestations?) were indeed inhabiting… Read more »
I thought the Trumps were our version of the Royal Family. Or is that only in their imaginations?
Personally, Antonio, I have always pictured them more as a cross between “Are You Being Served” and “Fawlty Towers”.
Yes gman1964, it was the mix of the coin and the grading certificate, also you can’t have thin skin on this thread. I in no way trust MM and his sales pitches. Once in a rare chance he does sell a bargain. Last year he sold the 2019 Silver Proof set for around $85 with the RP Cent (lost and found in his warehouse, has he ever heard of an inventory system?). It’s an average price of $130. He and who he represents are prime examples of buyer beware. My biggest gripe is he is called an expert and keeps… Read more »
“Buyer beware” is what stood out the most for me in your comment, Allan. This warning seems to apply to more and more economic transactions these days than perhaps ever before. On the other hand, one could argue that this cautionary outlook should perhaps be second nature by the time we are adults and as such have been around long enough to know that there are snares and traps for the more foolhardy of us around just about every corner.
Canada still hasn’t decided whose portrait to put on their coins, so they’ll still show Elizabeth II with the duel dates 1952 – 2022 as well as 2023 on the coin. It’s funny.
Is it even remotely possible, Antonio, that Canada is considering a major change in coin and bill policy which would end the use of the British monarch’s image going forward?
Oh happy day.
Is being anti-monarchist legal in these days of British Royal Family frenzy?
Well, join Prince Harry in that one.
It might make a difference if I explain that by “frenzy” I wasn’t referring to all the tumult within the Royal Family but rather the endless fascination of the American public for the doings of the Royals.
I think with what Harry and Megan are doing is going to cause the RF to disband. While they generate tons of tourism dollars for the country, many are getting offended over how much they actually own and get paid. But all this negative attention is not helping. I think an amusement park where Buckingham is will be fine. Relocate that ferris wheel. I believe the Canada mint will put the face on the coun that will garner the most sales. Probably another split year. Or the idea of a possible short run or limited release (I don’t think mike… Read more »
Why not put the image of Caffeine Mike “The Great I AM” Mezack on the obverse of all US and Canadian coinage going forward? After all, he has become the face of coin sales and by extension that of collecting as it is.
Who is Mike Mezack again? Must be a self obsessed over inflated individual. Except for here, I’ve never heard of him. I must be lucky.
Other than his being all too widely known as the “King Of Coin Sales” I myself haven’t the foggiest notion who this character is. 😉
He’s the snake that appears on HSN a few times a month hawking his coin wares.
Or as Caffeine Mike himself would say, “No one else can even get this so you know it’s going to sell out fast. No one else can even get this so you know it’s going to sell out fast.” Ssssssss.
Never watched him. But I’ll say this- he does profile coins, right? Anytime you can get the public to notice coins and possibly increase the ranks of coin collectors is not such a bad thing.
Several things are in play here, Major D:
You moved the focus to the upside.
He brings attention to numismatics.
There are two sides to every coin.
Everyone exhibits multiple aspects.
Judging others isn’t a viable hobby.
It can’t hurt to have more collectors.
