Rolls and bags of uncirculated Dr. Sally Ride quarters officially launch today at noon ET, marking the second release from the U.S. Mint’s four-year series of American Women quarter dollars.

Each features a design depicting Dr. Sally Ride as she is remembered by most — the first American woman to travel into space. The new quarter appears in sets of 40-coin rolls and in 100-coin bags.

Sally Ride became the first American woman in space when she blasted off aboard space shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983. Adding to that feat, she was only 32 making her the youngest American in space up to that time. Before that, Ride graduated with a PhD from Stanford with Astrophysics and free electron lasers serving as her specific area of study. Following her days as an astronaut, Ride served on commissions investigating the Challenger and Columbia disasters and wrote or co-wrote several space related children’s books encouraging them to pursue science interests.

Dr. Sally Ride Quarter Designs and Specifications

The quarter’s reverse (tails side) design was inspired by Dr. Sally Ride’s quote, "But when I wasn’t working, I was usually at a window looking down at Earth." Accordingly, the image depicts Ride next to a window on the space shuttle with planet Earth off in the distance.

The inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is intentionally positioned over the Earth next to the U.S., recognizing that Ride was the first American woman in space. Additional inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," and "DR. SALLY RIDE."

This design is the original work of United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Elana Hagler. It was sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill.

All coins of the new series bear the same obverse (heads side) portrait of George Washington. The image of the first President of the United States was originally designed by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate entry for the 1932 quarter dollar, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth.

Obverse inscriptions are "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2022."

U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarters™ Program

American Women Quarters are authorized under Public Law 116-330. The series is scheduled to run for four years at a rate of five per year — for a total of twenty unique designs, each showcasing the accomplishments and contributions made by women to the development and history of the U.S.

2022 American Women quarters honor the following individuals. (see 2022 quarter images):

  • Maya Angelou – noted author and poet
  • Dr. Sally Ride – physicist, astronaut, educator, and first American woman to soar into space
  • Wilma Man Killer – first woman elected principal chief of the Cherokee Nation and an activist for Native American and women’s rights
  • Nina Otero-Warren – a leader in New Mexico’s suffrage movement and the first female superintendent of Santa Fe public schools
  • Anna May Wong – first Chinese American film star in Hollywood, who left a legacy for women in the film industry

Rolls and bags of Maya Angelou quarters launched in February. Rolls and bags of the remaining three quarters will be issued this summer, spring and fall. A proof set of all five 2022 quarters sold out virtually immediately when it was released on March 8. A proof set of the quarters struck in .999 fine silver will go on sale March 29. Finally, five U.S. Mint ornaments containing each 2022 quarter are planned for a summer release.

These items are all sold out via Enrollments. Put your wallets away for another day.

I received confirmation for my enrollment last night.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Congratulations, Carl. That’s always a great feeling, isn’t it?

Rich

Sage advice, Sir Kaiser. Save it for the $95 Colorized Purple Heart Silver Dollar come this Thursday,

Kaiser Wilhelm

Thank you, Good Sir Rich.

I too am looking forward to that very striking and meaningful commemorative silver coin. While it has a small mintage it does have a 1 coin HOL, so there’s hope for us in that regard. By the way, did you also pre-order the rest of that series?

Rich

No, I have not pre-ordered any of the series’ products yet, but if I am going to, I better do so soon since “Introductory pricing will be in effect for single coin options until March 24, 2022 at 3:00 PM (ET).” So, thanks for the reminder!

Kaiser Wilhelm

No problem, Good Sir Rich; entirely my pleasure.

Ordinarily I don’t go for the Annual Commemoratives, but it does seem to me that both of this year’s selections are rather special.

I actually got 2 sets into my US Mint cart before they said “REMOVE FROM CART” these items are no longer available. I just had to do it for the sake of documenting how pathetic the Government has become and the US Mint continues to be.

I spent all morning canceling ebay orders for Sally Ride coins and issuing refunds to unhappy ebayers.

Good morning senza,
wondering how you were able to cancel eBay orders without being flagged by eBay ,I have the same problem, need to cancel. I’m also
a little worried about any negative feedback they’ll leave me . Any good ideas ?
Thanks

SENZA

I was fortunate that my buyers were very understanding and also victims of the same enrollment scam and have so far not left negative feedback. As for Feebay they threatened to charge me higher fees (Big Surprise Not) and told me my top rated seller status was in jeopardy because I was honest and canceled all orders for “Out of Stock” due to unforeseen event out of my control. And I kindly responded to Feebay to remind them they are Iranian Terrorists and scumbag criminals who can kiss my A and I didn’t really give a flying F what they… Read more »

I’ll take Kaleeforinia any day since that’s how I first spoke English back in the early ’50’s.

Some people are surprised that these quarters are so popular. I haven’t been a fan of the Statehood quarters or the National Park quarters, mainly because of the ugly crowded obverse without a date on it. I love this new obverse, and the date is back where it belongs.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Carl,

The new depiction of George Washington is absolutely brilliant, and to think that this portrait was rejected all those decades ago. Somebody at the Mint definitely did something very right this time, and I’m happy to give credit where credit is due.

Rich

Carl, so maybe that helps to explain why these new American Women Quarters are so hot! By George, it’s the new hot obverse and not the Women’s reverse (the coin’s backside).

Carl S

To be honest, with the exception of Dr. Sally Ride, I never heard of any of the women being honoured on these quarters before this year.

SENZA

Ditto Carl,

Don’t worry in 50 years they will Honor this US Mint Director who screwed us all on 03-22-2022 Because History and Reality are 2 very different things and history is rewritten by the NOW powers to suit their needs.

Kaiser,

We are getting close to that point now. Have you been to Baltimore lately? The education ‘elites’ appear to have given up on maintaining any sort of standards for the education of those living in low income inner cities. What they need is a few Tom Berenger’s ‘The Substitute’ to go in and clean things up. Oh, if things worked the way they do in films…

Rich

Right On, SENZA! “Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.” – George Orwell, 1984

Carl,

That’s because US history has ignored them, which is why it’s all the more important that they finally be brought to the public’s attention this way.

Carl, Me Too# The only other woman I heard of was Mankiller.

Antonio

Just think, this was the obverse there should have been back in 1932. We’ve waited a long time for it.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Antonio,

The bad part is we had to wait that long. The good thing is that we can see how in comparison this old previously rejected and unused design is a far superior one.

All these years, what we’ve missed out on.

Allan

The mint says the 2 roll P&D set is available.

Larry T

Who gives a damn about the P&D’s. The only one’s I’d consider buying would be the S minted roll. I’ve collected those S rolls since they were made available during the ATB series. Now, with a woman in charge, we’re required to buy all three if we want them. No thanks, I’ll spend my money elsewhere! Can we have Ryder back.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Larry,

I got the ATB S Rolls too, and those only since I wasn’t interested in the P and D.

Save them for a rainy day? Or you can flip them on Ebray I suppose.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Not to be flippe about it, but I get the Rolls to collect like anything else. I haven’t gotten any Bags because those I wouldn’t know what to do with.

Christopher Williams

To own them. I still possess my NJ and Delaware quarter bags. Just cool to own. I was lucky enough to sign up for the enrollment for PDS rolls. Received my confirmation last night and they have already been shipped. I will only collect the first year’s releases.

Larry T

Good question. I make anchors out of them!

Allan

The P&D rolls and bags were all available for 2 minutes.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Asked and answered, Allan, and case closed. I guess the Mint wasn’t kidding.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Allan,

Those must have been leftovers from the Enrollments, as your later comment verifies.

Allan

Kaiser

This was fast, it takes 2 minutes to checkout if you are quick and have a saved CC to select. I think this was down to the first or second person finished won. And the others in progress were told to remove something from their basket.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Allan,

Your report makes perfect sense. There could have only been a few errant Two Roll Sets left when high noon came around, so a minute or less would easily have taken care of cleaning the last of these out.

Carl S

I’ve come across quite a few of these in circulation.

Rich

Bingo! As you so well stated, it was meant to inspire collectors and spark a public celebration through “the first circulating and numismatic quarter program that exclusively honors the achievements of women by demonstrating what can be possible with determination, perseverance and the indomitable spirit of American women.”

Well the Woman at the US Mint did a terrible job of honoring the Women of the past and the Woman in charge of the US Mint set Women in the work place back 100 years today = SHAMEFUL. I read that Joe Biden hand picked her

so where does this end up? if everything is sold out via enrollment, then it becomes a race just to get the enrollment. I suppose that if the mint could decide that an enrollment is a guaranteed sale (no return), then they should just close enrollments 1-2 months before release and then whatever the total enrollments are at that point just make exactly that many and call it a day. that way nobody misses out (except those who didn’t know about it until after the closing date for enrollments) and the mint also doesn’t make too many or too few… Read more »

Right at noon the 3 roll set and the 100 coin bags became available for 2 minutes. Was able to get the 100 coin bag from Denver.

SENZA

The enrollment is now a scam like the rest of the US Mint operations and little guys like me can’t count on anything anymore from thje US Mint other than getting screwed so the Mint can take care of it’s dealers and NGC so they can sell all those perfect 70’s – NGC Grades are the new Fake News

Should US mint (San Francisco ) made more coins to meet the enrollment demand? Or using mail order to ensure quality of coin production.

FWIW I did see locally (SF bay area) a bus with an ad on the back for the US Mint hiring starting at $27.15/hour for a specific job (machinist). If you are not from the SF area this may sound like not all that bad money, but this wouldn’t even cover your rent in most apartments in or anywhere near SF, much less allow for food money. but the mere fact that the US Mint has resorted to putting hiring ads on the back of local buses for just one job just smacks a bit of desperation (the government generally… Read more »

FWIW I got 3 in change the other day (maya angelou, not the sally ride ones yet).

but this is probably more of a factor that people aren’t turning in their old coins hardly, so it seems like most coins you get in change are new.

RaphaelZ

Mint send me message that quarters are available at 12PM. When I signed in at 12 PM the 3 roll option has been sold out for a while, why then did the Dickweeds send me email saying all options were available. That is a big issue with the mint, misleading information and poor customer is the best they can do.

Have people really lost their minds? $260 for $30 worth of change. I thought paying $18.95/roll for the ATB S minted quarters was a bit expensive, but they did come with the US Mints paper wrapping.

Carl S

I doubt that the coins will worth nearly as much as people are paying on Ebay once things settle down.

c_q

those PDS rolls back in the day were only about $42 or so, now they are $54 – and yet, people apparently are forking over 5x that on ebay. Sure, maybe the sellers can ship them out in a very nice box or something, but it’s still silly.

I can only assume that people who are doing complete quarter collections absolutely must have these and as they are much smaller mintage than the others these will become ‘key’. either that, or there are a lot of sally ride fans out there.

Christopher Williams

C_q, it sure makes collecting coins cool and fascinating, doesn’t it.

SENZA

Dealers break open the rolls and sell one of each coin for $8 to as high as $19 so that can come out to over $700.00 for one 3 roll set

I can not believe it. The mint has created an artificial shortage of, get this CLAD QUARTERS. It is ridiculous that so many enrollment options for the quarters are sold out. Is it a shortage of clad blanks, paper rolls, or cloth bags. Who knows what the problem could be? These are not silver or gold commemoratives, just clad quarters!!! Couldn’t the mint simply make more coins or package more coins for he different options. If I were the mint, I’d be very proud of the situation they have created.

Rich

Chuck, you coined it! The Mint has lost its Mine.

keepout.jpg
Larry T

Just received an email from the mint indicating the Proof W ASE coin is almost sold out through the Enrollment Program! They say only 13,000 units remain to be sold. Glad I’m on the Enrollment Program, I honestly don’t understand why all these issues are selling out, especially since Biden & company are doing such a marvelous job with everything. Go figure!

c_q

13000 is still a good amount at least.

I like enrollment because you don’t have to fuss with individual purchases. but on the downside, if you want to pick-and-choose which ones you get it is more cumbersome.

as for why they are selling out, it’s appearing to be mostly due to lower quantity due to reduced mint staffing making things more ‘rare’ – and once that happens, the flippers come out to play. pretty sure if they get back to making a million or more of these things demand will come back to earth.

Larry T

Kaiser, Glad I have the enrollment in place for all three. Crazy times we are living in! Are you vying for the PH colorized coin today? If you are, good luck!

Antonio

So all ASEs from the U.S. Mint are sold out. Dang, that just leaves the ones from dealers and ebay. Well there’s always silver coins from Canada and Austria.
