The United States Mint introduced one product last week, the U.S. Army 2.5 Ounce Silver Medal.
As discussed earlier, the medal sold out with its product page toggled to show the "Remind Me" feature should any become available due cancellations, order reconciliations, etc.
This Army medal has a mintage max of 10,000 pieces. Issued March 6, Mint figures have its sales total through March 12 at 9,564.
Elsewhere, the recently released 2023-W Proof American Silver Eagle moved ahead, although one product with it saw reductions. Changes from a week earlier include:
- an addition of 19,199 coins to 354,408 coins for the standalone option (product code 23EA),
- an addition of 17,360 coins to 67,560 coins for the 40-coin bulk option (23EA040), and
- a drop of 11,471 coins to 23,319 coins as a part of the Congratulations Set (product code 23RF).
Considering the three options, 2023-W Proof Silver Eagle sales combine to 445,287 coins. The standalone option was the Mint’s best weekly seller.

I see the 3 roll Bessie Coleman had over 100 returns as the speculators realize there are so many rolls on EBAY that some ‘starting asking prices’ are under what the mint charged. Could see that coming months ago. Next quarter in the series still available under subscription. I guess if the 100 or so rolls come back fully wrapped as was sent, the mint resells them? (since one can purchase the supposed item that was sold out at one time) As for the innovation dollars, all 25 coin rolls sold out from both mints. still over 40,000 of the… Read more »
It’s not so much the starting asking price, but the final sales price that matters. In just checking recent eBay sales for the PDS set of Coleman AWQ, I don’t see anything under $60, or under $30 for just the S-roll. I’d say the real test is in a few years from now.
Bottom line, Major D, regardless of what else happens, unlike the 4X gap between spot prices and sale prices for the Mint’s silver products the difference between the face value of the quarter rolls and their sale price is only a factor of 2X.
the point of my argument is that the Sally Ride 3 roll set is asking for around $200 (and people are undoubtedly buying it) and you don’t see many available. You might get $80 for the current Coleman set and plenty are being offered. Assuming 15% goes to paypal, that leaves a net of $68 or so, so less than $10 for your trouble to package and ship, etc. so a number of people subscribed for 3 rolls are either reducing or dropping their subscription as the rolls go from sold out to available back and forth.
The best thing about buying rolls is you can crack them to spend when times get tough.
I don’t think anyone wants my George H.W. Bush dollars.
Somewhere, Antonio, out there amidst the wonderful wide world of numismatism, there has to be someone who collects G.H.W. Bush dollars.
… and the Platinum Eagle reverses course and starts selling again. Wonder how many of those sales will be returned?
On the other hand, Reb, almost one third of the Congratulations Sets were returned to the Mint. Apparently some really big buyer had buyer’s remorse in a really big way.
I just don’t see how the 34,790 number was ever accurate. The Mint mailed these out and over 11K were all sent back within one week’s time and then all were immediately put back up for sale? That is impossible by my understanding. Mint shipments, the USPS (one trip to receive and another to return), Mint returns, and Mint warehouse would all have to work at warp speed. This has got to be an accounting adjustment, not returns.
Bingo, Major D, I think you hit the nail on the head.. Upon re-reading the column above I see that nowhere does it say those were in fact “returns”. As you pointed out, it could have been an accounting error, or if I were to guess, perhaps a massive order cancellation or cancellations. For that matter, it could have been both an accounting error and a change of mind.
I’m not sure how order cancellations would not have already been adjusted for in the sales number? You place an order, it gets charged to your card or account and goes to shipping. I’m assuming once the charge transaction occurs it immediately counts as a sale (because I’ve noticed instant reductions to the “data-available” number equal to my purchase quantity). But if you cancel before it’s shipped, it’s still counted as a sale until the charge is reversed/ payment refunded, which may take days? If that’s how it works, it sure is a recipe for misleading weekly sales numbers.
“And go round and round and round in the circle game.”
“Same as it ever was.”
By the way, it must have been warp speed, Major D, at which this young actor went to being all of 91 in what seemed to be no more than the blink of an eye.
11k returns on the Congratulations Set. I guess more people realize its the same coin as the regular proof eagle, not really a subset, part of the overall pool. Other artificial “subsets”: Advanced Purchase – Whatever. So some dealers got their coins before others. Same coin. 2023 minted in 2022 – Whatever. The mint always starts producing coins in December for the following year, but now I can prove it? Same coin. Special label subset – Whatever. So you paid the grading service to create 5000 special labels of your design. Same coin. Maybe I’m just tired or to jaded… Read more »
I really don’t see, gman1964, why you would even marginally deign to imagine that any single one of the above mentioned examples of blatantly obvious coin sales chicanery could possibly in the smallest of ways be construed as revealing to the slightest degree any sign of you having gotten tired or jaded when it comes to the acquisition and collecting of coins. All those patently ridiculous attempts at manufacturing artificial differences between completely identical coins simply with the end in sight of substantially increasing the seller’s price and as a consequence thereof artificially enhancing his profit margin are best taken… Read more »
gman1964, let’s look at the math for the Congrat set. There is a limit of 40,000. It was released on Thursday, March 2, with 27,440 available just before the noon sales started. It was listed as Not Available by March 5th. On March 7, the Mint released the March 5th sales report stating sales of 34,790 by end of day on that Sunday. On Thursday, March 9 (exactly 1 week after release) at 3 pm EST Rich reported that it was back available with 12,686. So, between March 5th and March 12th there was a net loss of 11,471 in… Read more »
Clearly the above displayed equation doesn’t take all factors into consideration.
I agree. But I was referring to the graded coins stating “From the Congratulations Set”. So they sent the set to a grader for them to extract it from the packaging and encapsulate? If it was a completely different type, such as burnished, I would understand, hell, I would be clamoring for it too.
Oh well, it’s all good.
Yeah, that’s a crazy distinction for slabs.
Yes, Major D & gman1964, that distinction means absolutely NOTHING.
The Army 2.5 oz silver medal is back available today: 53 as of 9:35 am EST March 16.
The Mint sent the “Remind Me” text out at 9:07am EST.
It still hasn’t been posted as officially “Sold Out” by the Mint yet.

Perhaps it will be “Sold Out” again, Seth, and then later, magically so, it won’t be.
I love these coins
Which ones, Harold; the medals?
