Lacking 2023-dated products for another week, there’s not much to talk about in the latest round of U.S. Mint sales figures. Except, maybe, for some exceptionally low gains for even core numismatic issues. Still, how much importance can anyone attach to older products whose stories have practically played out?
The U.S. Mint’s top numismatic seller through the week ending Jan. 22 was the 2022-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle, rising 535, while the 10th most-sold was the 2022 American Innovation Dollar Reverse Proof Set, which posted an increase of 96. Highlighting the discussion, between the pair are scatterings of 2021-dated products and even one from 2018.
Lower sales volumes appear elsewhere in the report. The Mint’s latest published sales data lists 277 numismatic products. Only 24 of them outperformed their prior weekly gains against 89 previously.
Weekly U.S. Mint Top Sellers
Here’s the listing of the U.S. Mint’s most popular numismatic products for the week ending Jan. 22:

- 2022 American Innovation Dollar Reverse Proof Set (+96 to 45,991)
In addition, 16 products posted negative weekly sales against 11 in the previous report. The reductions were modest were over half of them coming from 2022 commemorative coins.

Yaaaawn…..stretch
You forgot, cracked knuckles.
Head tilts to the rear with fingers knitted behind it.
Leans left. Raises knee. Farts
One of our decidedly less than refined pastimes in the college dorms back in the good old mid-1960’s was taking a match to those and there they went…phooom!
Hot Dog! Just saw that my entire subscription page is populated with dates now. Much better for planning. Unfortunately, the Mint also messed with my quantities- lowering a lot of them down.
Major D,
That’s one of those classic “There’s good news and there’s bad news; do you want to hear the good news or the bad news first?” scenarios!
The bad news is, this is the government you’re dealing with.
Nope, this part is run just like a business.
Major D – were your quantities above the current ‘limit’ for an individual and the Mint simply reduced them to that level? And if your current amount is under the limit were you then able to increase, e.g. you were lucky to notice it and have now increased your amount to what you wanted?
Tom, I figured out what happened. When I enrolled the limits on several were higher than they are now. The Mint retroactively reduced some HOL’s and my quantities were decreased as a result of that. Also, my AWQ PDS rolls subscription was still showing the decrease to 1 from 2022’s Anna May Wong HOL reduction that the Mint did unilaterally because of heavy demand. I was able to increase that one back up to 3.
Major D and Antonio, the Mint is financially unique as it is the only part of the federal government that is mandated to contribute money to rather than to take it from the General Fund of the Treasury.
Major D, thanks for the verification of what took place. We are now within 3 days of the Ohio innovation coin release. Because of that you are supposedly no longer able to subscribe for the Ohio coin, but subscription is open for the next release – Louisiana – that is the picture that shows. According to data available there are 448 remaining of the 25 coin roll from Philadelphia, so it looks like on Monday there will be the mad dash for the remaining Ohio rolls. So what happens…if you subscribe now, it should be for Louisiana, so does the… Read more »
Tom, I appreciate the renewal of my attention to this year’s Innovation Coin Series subscription situation courtesy of your comment. I was immediately moved to go to the relevant online US Mint pages in order to further elucidate the current state of the Innovation Coin Series as the subscription program currently applies to it. Here are the numbers of each item available from the Mint’s data reported as of 3PM 1/28/23: OHIO INNOVATION COIN P rolls – 7890 D rolls – 6875 P bags- 2885 D bags- 2700 LOUISIANA INNOVATION COIN P rolls – 518 D rolls – 643 P… Read more »
what you have for Ohio is misleading. It is a quirk in the mint’s system or something. your numbers indicate what shows under ‘current product’, which makes no sense because that implies only 110 P rolls for Ohio have been ‘bought’ or ‘subscribed’ to. (and we know Kaiser has subscribed for at least 200 – ha. The numbers you show for Louisiana are what show under subscription – which if you had looked a few days ago would have basically been the same thing when Ohio was still available under subscription. It would be nice if they fixed this. I’m… Read more »
Tom, that makes the Mint’s presentation incredibly dysfunctional! You’re saying that the Ohio figures shown are almost the same as the Mint’s original production numbers while for Louisiana the number of coins that people have subscribed to is what appears on the screen. I can’t imagine how any of that seemingly contradictory reporting could in any way be helpful, useful or comprehensible to those of us who want to know how things stand for our coin purchase planning purposes.
we had discussed this earlier. for some reason if you loo under current product the numbers that show make no sense. the P rolls have shown at 7890 for quite awhile. only under subscription do you get an idea of what is available. e.g. the women’s quarters under enrollment eventually dropped to zero and then showed as sold out. so there is some accuracy out there (I think), and whether this is simply a glitch with the innovation series, I don’t know. I haven’t looked at the data close enough in regards to other coins.
Here’s my take of the AI$ P&D mintages. I added any available numbers (for rolls and bags) to the latest sales report #sold to get a mintage number for each dollar. What I found is that the mintage for the P coin has been almost the same as for the D coin, and that the mintages for all four coins released in the same year are almost the same as well. For 2019, each AI dollar has a P mintage and a D mintage of 880,000+/-. For 2020, it’s 430,000+/-. For 2021 and 2022, it’s 450,000+/-. So, for 2023, I… Read more »
Major D and Tom,
Many, many big thanks to both of you for all the research you have done and for all the facts you have produced here by way of explanation regarding the actual numbers that apply regarding the AI coins as concerns their original total mintage, their current subscription numbers and their remaining inventory. That being said, I’m sure my continuing problem with the width and breadth of these assorted calculations is that their apparent intricacies are more than a bit confusing to my essentially “words instead of numbers” oriented mind.
and now the numbers appear to be ‘fixed'(?) The P roll shows at 1244. A few days ago (before the subscription was changed to the next roll in the series) it was around 500 under subscription. They are only supposed to produce 8000 of the rolls, so the numbers of rolls available went up around 750, which is about 10% of the total to be released. It has been my gut feeling that the amount available under subscription was less than the actual number available, and it looks like they might have held 10% in reserve. That is only a… Read more »
Do those numbers also account for those AWQ Sets allotted to the Early Purchase Program and Authorized Bulk Purchases, or are these AWQ Roll Sets not included in the alternative purchasing methods?
who knows. I did look at the 3 roll quarter set for kicks – data available now indicates 1 roll available for subscription. someone must have cancelled …Don’t everyone rush at once!
Sometimes, Tom, trying to decipher the Mint’s inexplicable calculations is nigh on too much for the human mind to endure.
The Quantum Realm comes to mind. I like your weirding way also.
Thank you, Antonio. Ever since I first read Dune I haven’t been able to get the concept of the “weirding way” out of my mind. It’s fitting that you should bring up the Quantum Realm in that its apparent properties suggest an elusiveness well deserving of the appellation “weird”, and there, I suppose, is as good a synchronistic point/line as any for the universes of scientific measurement and boundless imagination to cross each other’s non-existent barriers.
Kaiser — I’m still alive but haven’t said much in the last few months because I am just not too excited about this year’s mint offerings. But your doctor’s comment reminded me of the time my doc called me and said she (yes, a she) had some “bad news and worse news for me … and asked which I would like to hear first.” I said “ok doc, give me the bad news.” She responded “you’ve got one day to live.” I said “what could be worse than that?” She said “I should have told you yesterday.” Stay well my… Read more »
It’s very good to hear from you again after all this time, Mike, and the fact that you’re still among the living is especially fortuitous. Since you were last here my beloved wife’s very dear brother and only sibling passed away completely unexpectedly and suddenly at the age of 76. Things obviously have not felt the same for us since then and needless to say we are on and off finding ourselves still working our way through previously unfamiliar circumstances and emotions. But again, welcome back! I know what you mean about this year’s Mint product lineup. It’s as if… Read more »
Kaiser — Many thanks for your kind and thoughtful comments. Please accept my condolences on the passing of your wife’s brother. Unfortunately, though, those words are all too shallow and insufficient … but received all too often at our age. As for me, I am getting very tired of learning that the last time I said good bye to an old friend would be the last time I would say good bye to that old friend …. Among other things, did you know that pre-recorded TAPS are now often played at our National Cemeteries? I attended an old friend’s services… Read more »
I am indeed grateful for and deeply moved by your extremely kind and thoughtful reply; thank you ever so much, Mike. And you are so right that at our age the notices of our peers going to meet their Maker are coming all too frequently and too close together at that. The reminders of mortality, clearly, are not so gradually becoming ever more inescapable. In regards to military funerals, my father had a magnificent one at Arlington National Cemetery in 1984 with all the extremely dignified pomp and circumstance we could possibly have hoped for. I was left with both… Read more »

Jeeez, long time no encounter, sam “I am” tweedy. Keeping that Forrest running, eh?
By the way, sam I am, I always follow your advice and take Old Lady Naps to recharge my aging batteries; no Energizer Bunny running around these here parts.
Maybe you need some toddlers to watch to give their mums a rest. Only kidding.
While we absolutely adore our five grandchildren we’re allergic to babysitting.
